GET "GOT POETRY?" FOR YOUR SCHOOL!
Poetry is for everyone — and reading, writing, and hearing poetry is fun!
That’s the message that I carry to schools with
my “got poetry?” programs.
In my programs, I share some of my own poetry, talk and answer questions about the writing of poetry, and then work with students to create their own poetry about their own real lives.
My "got poetry?" programs are most suitable for middle schools and high schools (and also for young adult and adult audiences in libraries) and can be adapted for multiple classes, school assemblies, and individual classes. Block schedules? Traditional class periods? No problem.
writing workshops, master classes
Writing workshops (which can be combined with my poetry readings) focus on helping writers expand their horizons by exploring numerous writing genres. Shorter workshops focus on poetry (tanka, haiku, common measure, sonnets, free verse) and short fiction. In schools, my most popular workshops are devoted to developing students' skills in writing interpretation.
Master classes are designed for quite small groups of writers who wish to focus on specific elements of their writing — things like character development in fiction, particular verse forms in poetry, memoir writing, nature writing, and the like.
